As part of my placement year at Nottingham Trent University, I moved to Transylvania in 2016 to practise joinery at a master craftsman.
Karoly Mezei taught me traditional techniques of solid wood, bespoke furniture manufacture. At the independently ran workshop, I was introduced to lathes, circular saws, drilling, profiling and wood-turning machines. I helped with the production by carrying out finishing procedures such as sanding, staining and assembly. I learnt how to create strong joints using hand tools, how to carve with chisels and how to prepare and carry out the making of a general piece of furniture.
